THE BEAUTY REMINDER

CHANGING THE FACE OF BEAUTY

Throughout our lives there are so many times when we forget our beauty, but each time we forget there are friends and loved ones who help us remember that we are beautiful, loved and lovable. Through their love and kindness, acceptance and respect they show us the beauty of who we are and in doing this they open us up to the possibilities in life and the value we have as human beings.

When we see how lovable we are we begin to see how beautiful we are.

THE BEAUTY OF A MOTHER

CHANGING THE FACE OF BEAUTY

A good friend of mine who is a beautiful mother sent this to me and I thought I would share it with you.

Real Mothers don't eat quiche; They don't have time to make it.

Real Mothers know that their kitchen utensils Are probably in the sandbox.

Real Mothers often have sticky floors, Filthy ovens and happy kids.

Real Mothers know that dried play dough Doesn't come out of carpets.

Real Mothers don't want to know what The vacuum just sucked up...

Real Mothers sometimes ask 'Why me?' And get their answer when a little voice says, 'Because I love you best.'

Real Mothers know that a child's growth Is not measured by height or years or grade... It is marked by the progression of Mummy to Mum to Mother.....

The Images of Mother

4 YEARS OF AGE - My Mummy can do anything!
8 YEARS OF AGE - My Mum knows a lot! A whole lot!
12 YEARS OF AGE - My Mother doesn’t know everything!
14 YEARS OF AGE - My Mother? She wouldn’t have a clue. .
16 YEARS OF AGE - Mother? She's so five minutes ago.
18 YEARS OF AGE - That old woman? She's way out of date!
25 YEARS OF AGE - Well, she might know a little bit about it!
35 YEARS OF AGE - Before we decide, let's get Mum's opinion.
45 YEARS OF AGE - Wonder what Mum would have thought about it?
65 YEARS OF AGE - Wish I could talk it over with Mum.

The beauty of a woman is not in the clothes she wears, the figure she carries, or the way she combs her hair. The beauty of a woman must be seen from in her eyes, Because that is the doorway to her heart. The place where love resides. The beauty of a woman is not in a facial mole, But true beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul. It is the caring that she lovingly gives, the passion that she shows, and the beauty of a woman with passing years only grows!

THE BEAUTY VISIONARY

CHANGING THE FACE OF BEAUTY

The beauty visionary sees beauty where others can't.
They see beyond the limitations of the physical and recognise the possibilities of the human body.
They hold the highest vision for themselves and others knowing we are all unique.
They are willing to move beyond the hurt and the pain that life often serves up and find the joy.
They stretch out of their comfort zones to grow.
They know that good food equals good health but they never under estimate the power of good thoughts and how it creates beautiful feelings and beautiful lives.

COCOA OR COFFEE

CHANGING THE FACE OF BEAUTY

Most of like a cup of coffee, but recently research has shown that cocoa contains high levels of two dietary flavonols, catechin and epicatchin which improves circulation to skin cells, protects the skin from sun damage, improves hydration and makes the skin feel and look smoother. So make the swap.

I CAN SEE IT ALL OVER YOUR FACE!

CHANGING THE FACE OF BEAUTY

Sometimes it is not words that communicate our feelings strongly, but our facial expressions. As a child I knew when my mother simply lowered her eyes that something was very wrong; and when my father’s bottom lip protruded, I knew he was in a bad mood. But as well as seeing what was wrong I could also see that their facial expressions communicated love and a variety of different emotions.

A while back I asked a friend how they were feeling and they told me that they couldn't be happier; yet their face told another story. With this in mind I always ask myself is my facial expression matching my words.

A beautiful face is the result of beautiful feelings.

TRUSTING IN TOMORROW

CHANGING THE FACE OF BEAUTY

When we have our heart fixed on the goal of feeling our beauty, we approach each day with an inner knowing that we have an opportunity to experience it. With each day that passes we begin to build a stronger self belief generating enthusiasm that flows through so many areas of our life.

Even though some days we may feel better than others we can trust that there will always be tomorrow to take positive action in our thoughts, words, deeds and feelings. Everyday that passes we know that we have another opportunity to approach our beauty with a fresh commitment.

Today will not fail you unless you decide not to use it to express and feel your beauty.

LET IT GO

CHANGING THE FACE OF BEAUTY

As human beings we all screw up at certain points in our life and make mistakes. Yesterday I bumped into a woman whom I hadn’t seen in a while, but she was not the happy person I remembered; she was utterly miserable venting strongly about the hate she felt for the man who had left her and how he had destroyed her life.

I felt sorry for her and when I asked how long she had been separated, she said ten years! The way she spoke about it was like it had happened last week. I certainly understood the anger, but she was intent on nursing her wounds and not letting them heal. Hanging on to past hurts is like winning the booby prize. She got to be right about what a bad man did to her and how he had wronged her. She had a right to be angry and in her mind what he had done was unforgivable.

But what did all that being ‘right’ get her; nothing but daily misery. As I walked away I thought about the situation - would she rather be right and feel angry, or call up the courage of goodness, forgive and move on?

But let us not confuse forgiveness with allowing ourselves to be abused. More often than not we can learn from the past, feel the anger and then let the past be the past. We owe it to ourselves not to carry the heavy load of hurt from the past with us.

EMOTIONAL PAIN

CHANGING THE FACE OF BEAUTY

No one likes to experience emotional pain but more often than not it is our internal alarm that reminds us when we are operating outside our truth. There is no doubt pain is a powerful signal that helps us to make different decisions, when to say no to situations that no longer support us and when we need to nurture ourselves and remember our value as human beings.

HE IS SO BAD

CHANGING THE FACE OF BEAUTY

HE IS SO BAD

A couple of weeks ago I found myself in a group of women who were discussing the battle of the sexes. One woman thought it was an opportunity to have a casual session of man bashing.
"Men don’t know how to communicate", they never give me the emotional support I need," and the list went on. Before long everyone had something to say. "He isn’t affectionate"; "Men are insensitive" etc..

In a spirit of good will I took a deep breath and said, "Ladies, as a man I can tell you that we are not bad people, we are just different!"Fighting to make each other wrong is a waste of valuable energy. We can disagree with a person, but that doesn't mean we have to make them wrong. Accepting each others differences opens us up to unlimited possibilities that allow us to draw on each
others strengths and is the starting point for long lasting positive changes.

Men are not wrong, women are not wrong - they are just different!

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A DAY MAKES

CHANGING THE FACE OF BEAUTY

It is so true, time goes by very quickly. It feels like one minute we are eating Easter eggs, the next minute we are scoffing Turkey and singing Christmas carols. Sometimes we don’t stop to enjoy the journey, we just keep going and going and going.

I must admit I am guilty of this, but on Saturday I took myself to the beach and laid in the water for three hours while I read a book that I love.

Just laying in the sun gently reminded me that we can go through life almost sleep walking without even knowing it is truly there. Yet when we stop to smell the roses, we open up to experience it fully and it certainly makes the difference.

LOVE THRIVES

CHANGING THE FACE OF BEAUTY

Love thrives in environments where differences are not just tolerated but celebrated, where kindness is as valued as passion, where respect is earned by our daily acts and choices, where we give without asking for anything in return and where we know the value of giving in but never giving up our integrity.

From a point of peace and gentleness we can always bring someone into our hearts, continually demonstrating caring, sharing, kindness, goodness and the love that these qualities bring.

CHANGING THE FACE OF BEAUTY

There has been a lot in the media lately about graphically manipulated images and the impact they are having on women's body image, encouraging an insatiable desire to be thin.

For many decades now we have equated thin with beauty. So many women that I have known or worked with over the years seem to obsess about the shape and size of their bodies, while simultaneously being conscious that it is a waste of valuable energy and time - and in many ways, a somewhat shallow pursuit.

And so while many complain, when I ask them what they can do about it, they blame the media. Yet I believe pointing the finger at media images is far too simple and overlooks the fact that we are responsible for the way we think and feel about ourselves.

When we own this truth, regardless of what the beauty industry decides to serve up, women (and men) won't feel the need to eat it.

Fashion is part of pop culture, but it doesn't have the power to determine the passion we feel for ourselves. As individuals we have the power to chose how we think and feel about ourselves.

We don't have to change our bodies, we have to change our thoughts about them.

YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL

CHANGING THE FACE OF BEAUTY

Right here, right now you are whole and beautiful.

Even if you ate that piece of chocolate cake you promised yourself you wouldn't eat.

Even if you didn't go to the gym when you said you would.

Even if you are questioning your life's purpose or your relationship.

Even if you have hurt someone you loved or failed them in some way.

Even if you are criticising yourself for not being what you believe you should be.

Even if you are not strong enough to walk away from a situation that does not support you.

Whatever is going on, look at it and learn from it, but do not punish and belittle yourself for it.

So when you are having one of those days and feel tempted to get down on yourself, see them as opportunities for introspection and self reflection. When we get to know ourselves better, we are in a better position to accept ourselves, forgive ourselves and nurture ourselves in the full knowledge that we are all doing the best we can with who we are and what we know at this point in time.

Because the truth is that all we can do is the best we can do, all we can be is the best we can be.

When we accept who we truly are, our hearts open, our spirits are raised and our body and life is nurtured.

LOVE YOURSELF

CHANGING THE FACE OF BEAUTY

At a book signing a woman asked me if it was possible to truly love who you are? That question got me thinking about the fact that there are aspects that we like about ourselves, others that we love and then there are those that we don't even want to admit we have.

Despite this I do believe it is possible to love ourselves fully. Love relationships do not rely on perfection and neither does the relationship we have with ourselves. However, very importantly, the relationship we have with ourselves determines the relationship we have with others; and in many ways it becomes the blue print from which we build all our relationships from.

If we only love the parts of ourselves that we find acceptable, we are denying the other parts that also belong to us, thereby only accepting and living with half of who we are. If we cannot find compassion for ourselves when we fall short in certain areas of our lives, then we cannot extend compassion to the people we share our lives with.

Loving ourselves doesn't mean we have to be perfect, but it does means that the greatest gift we can give ourselves is to accept who we are, learn more about who we are and punish ourselves less for all the things that simply make us human.

STOP SMOKING!

CHANGING THE FACE OF BEAUTY

A year ago a friend of mine wanted her husband to stop smoking. She tried everything - nagging, incessantly, constantly referencing the health dangers and starting an argument every time he lit up. But nothing stopped him.

His habit made her unhappy, his choices made her furious and his enjoyment brought her anger. She told me none of it was working and so I suggested that she leave him alone. Her reply was, 'That won’t work,' but as I reminded her, nagging wasn’t working either.

So she gave it a go and and while she said it took enormous amounts of restraint to say nothing - she left well alone. It was a year later that he gave it up. But at that point he gave it up because he wanted to, not because his wife told him to.

Sometimes we need to give our partners the space to work out what supports them and what doesn’t. We can support them to make positive changes, but we cannot make changes for them.

There are some things in life that we can change and others we can’t. When it comes to another person's habit - it's not ours to change!

YOU SAID WHAT?

CHANGING THE FACE OF BEAUTY

My grandmother (Ouma) didn't have an easy life. She experienced poverty, lived through the war and survived two marriages. But instead of letting life's grim experiences bury her, she reminded herself constantly of the small pleasures that it can bring. A good cup of tea with just a dash of milk was one of those pleasures; another was sharing whatever she had with her family and neighbours.

What I learnt from her was that we are all given life and what we choose to do with it is up to us.

We can rage against it because it seems unfair or we can see it full of possibilities; we can choose to fully participate and chase our dreams, or we can sit on the side lines and watch it go by.

In short, we can choose to stay in bed or decide to get up and face the day.

As my Ouma used to say, "Don’t lay in bed longer than you need to - Get up!"

OH THAT HURT

CHANGING THE FACE OF BEAUTY

Yesterday a friend of mines daughter had her heart broken by her first love. She is only sixteen. Seeing her cry reminded me of the disappointments and the bliss that love brings. But I believe the journey to understand the full spectrum of love develops over a lifetime as we learn from our disappointments and our hurts.

Each lesson requires us to overcome an emotional love wound and provides us with the wisdom to know the truth about ourselves and love; and to accept that when we are learning about love we can never avoid the pain, but we will survive the wounds if we are willing to learn from each experience.

When I look back on the many different lessons in my life I realise that all those experiences were in fact a small price to pay for learning about the power of love.

LIFE'S CHALLENGES

CHANGING THE FACE OF BEAUTY

It is a fact that life brings us many challenges - some bigger than others.

But whether they are big or small, when you are dealing with an issue keep in mind the challenges that you have overcome in the past.

Feel the sense of power that comes with knowing that you overcame whatever obstacle was in your path. Use them as a reminder to become stronger and more determined.

Remember that you have control over your life and your actions. So whatever issue you are facing, know that 'this too will pass'.

TAKING TIME...

CHANGING THE FACE OF BEAUTY

My sister sent this to me the other day and I thought it was so powerful that I would share it...

Washington, D.C. Metro Station on a cold January morning. The man with a violin played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time approx two thousand people went through the station, most of them on their way to work.

After three minutes a middle aged man noticed there was a musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds and then hurried to meet his schedule.

4 minutes later: The violinist received his first dollar: a woman threw the money in the hat and, without stopping, continued to walk.

6 minutes: A young man leaned against the wall to listen to him, then looked at his watch and started to walk again.

10 minutes: A three-year old boy stopped but his mother tugged him along hurriedly. The kid stopped to look at the violinist again, but the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk, turning his head all the time. This action was repeated by several other children. Every parent, without exception, forced their children to move on quickly.

45 minutes: The musician played continuously. Only six people stopped and listened for a short while. About 20 gave money but continued to walk at their normal pace... The man collected a total of $32.

1 hour: He finished playing and silence took over. No one noticed. No one applauded, nor was there any recognition.

No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the greatest musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written, with a violin valued at $3.5 million dollars. Two days before Joshua Bell sold out a theatre in Boston where the seats averaged $200.

This is a true story. Joshua Bell playing incognito in the metro station was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste and people's priorities.

The questions raised: in a common place environment at an inappropriate hour, do we perceive beauty? Do we stop to appreciate it? Do we recognize talent in an unexpected context? One conclusion reached from this experiment could be this: If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world, playing some of the finest music ever written, with one of the most beautiful instruments ever made... How many other things are we missing?
